Appalachian Citizens’ Law Center (ACLC) is seeking a staff attorney to work at its Whitesburg office. The position is available immediately.
About ACLC: Appalachian Citizens’ Law Center is a nonprofit law firm that fights for justice in the Appalachian coalfields by representing citizens and communities who have been affected by present and past abuses of the mining industry. We offer free legal services, strategic litigation, policy work, and research in the areas of federal black lung benefits, environmental protection, mine safety, sustainable energy, and economic analysis.
ACLC’s three major initiatives are: 1) the Coal Miner Health and Safety Project, which works to seek economic and worker justice for miners and their families in the Appalachian coalfields on the issues of black lung disease and miner safety; 2) the Environmental Justice Project, which provides legal support to individuals and communities affected by the environmental impacts of coal mining and other extractive industries; and 3) the Abandoned Mine Lands Initiative, which provides analysis, leadership, and accountability around returning federal dollars to the Appalachian economy for remediation of lands damaged by mining.
For this position, ACLC is seeking a staff attorney to provide representation primarily in federal black lung benefits claims for coal miners and their survivors. The attorney will practice before the Office of Administrative Law Judges, the Benefits Review Board, U.S. District Courts and U.S. Courts of Appeals. The attorney will also advocate for healthier working conditions for current miners and a more just benefits and healthcare system for miners suffering from black lung disease. ACLC works with black lung associations and disabled miners to organize around legislative and regulatory change, educate the community, and support each other. The ideal candidate will be a skilled lawyer with excellent academic credentials, litigation experience, a background in public benefits and health law, a strong work ethic and a sense of initiative, a demonstrated ability to work well in a collegial setting, and a personal commitment to ACLC’s mission.
Salary based on experience and qualifications. ACLC offers an excellent benefits package.
